Hollywood, FL – After months of Tim Canova asking scandal plagued six-term congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz to a series of six debates on the most important issues, the people of South Florida may get to see the two debate – if Wasserman Schultz keeps her word. Earlier today, she told the Sun-Sentinel’s Anthony Man that she plans on debating her challenger Canova prior to the August 30 primary.
Canova has been pressing Wasserman Schultz for debates since early April when he sent her a letter challenging her to a series of debates. Wasserman Schultz repeatedly met the Nova Southeastern University law professor and longtime progressive activist’s calls with silence and dismissal. On July 11, the Canova campaign began airing a TV commercial with video clips of Wasserman Schultz speaking about the importance of debates, followed by video of her repeatedly dodging the question of debating Canova when asked by the media and constituents.
When asked about Wasserman Schultz’s statement today that she would debate him, Canova stated:
“I was happy to hear news that Debbie Wasserman Schultz says that she will debate me. I will believe it when I see it. Four months ago, I proposed a series of six debates to cover a wide range of issues. Wasserman Schultz has dodged debates for four months and she’s been dodging her own constituents for even longer. I believe she owes the residents of Florida’s 23rd Congressional district an accounting for her record of absenteeism and inaction in Congress and the circumstances of her resigning in disgrace from the Democratic National Committee. While I welcome this news, I have always maintained that there must be a series of debates to discuss the range of issues of importance to South Florida, including the economy, campaign finance and political reform, immigration, criminal justice reform and the war on drugs, environmental issues, and foreign policy and national security.”
