Wasserman Schultz challenger Tim Canova announces record-shattering fundraising quarter 

Democratic primary challenger to U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schulz will have the resources to win after raising more than $550,000 from over 25,000 individual contributions in the first three months of 2016  

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -- Tim Canova, the Democratic primary challenger to U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz announced today that his campaign raised more than $550,000 from 25,000 individual contributions during the first fundraising quarter of the year, a record-shattering sum that indicates his ability to run a competitive and winning challenge to the incumbent and Democratic National Committee chairwoman.  

"Our campaign has been met with incredible enthusiasm,” said Canova, a Professor of Law and Public Finance at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale.  “There is an intense desire in South Florida, as there is around the country, to end politics as usual and elect a representative who will put the people first, not big Wall Street banks and giant companies."  

While refusing to take any donations from corporate PACs and Wall Street, Canova has raised significantly more campaign funds than any candidate in an inaugural financial quarter in the history of South Florida’s congressional district covering north Miami-Dade and south Broward Counties. Canova’s results may well be a record for 1st quarter online fundraising from small donors for a non-incumbent running for Congress anywhere in the country.

We truly are a grassroots movement that will restore a voice in our democracy to everyday people and demand accountability from our leaders.  It is now abundantly clear that our campaign will have the resources necessary to succeed in this election," said Canova.

Fundraising numbers of note in the last three months:

• Total Raised: $557,000

  • Nearly $100,000 was raised in the last four days of the quarter alone, revealing that the campaign is only just picking up steam.

  • $6200 daily average o Average contribution of under $20

  • Only 6 donors have given the federally allowable maximum, which means that 99.99% of Canova donors can contribute again.

• Over 25,000 donations from 15,295 contributors

Canova, a first time candidate who has spent years advocating for campaign finance reform and fairness in our economic system, has been endorsed by National Nurses United and the Communications Workers of America, as well as Progressive Democrats of America.
