Wasserman Schultz challenger, Tim Canova, raises more than $100,000 in first week of April
Fundraising Success Showcases Campaign’s Growing Momentum
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Tim Canova, the progressive primary challenger to U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, raised an astounding $100,000 in online contributions in the first seven days of April, the campaign announced today. This is in addition to the historic $557,000 raised in the first financial quarter by the insurgent grassroots campaign. More than 5,000 individual donations were made since the beginning of the month with an average contribution that is roughly $20 per gift.
Unlike Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s campaign, which largely relies on wealthy corporate donors giving thousands of dollars apiece, more than 97% of Canova’s donors have given less than $100 total and 99.99% of contributors have the ability to give again -- a powerful reminder of the intense enthusiasm and support the political newcomer has earned over the last three months.
“It is now clear that our campaign will have the resources to compete with Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s corporate fundraising machine,” said Canova campaign spokesman Richard Bell. “In such a short period of time, we have been able to build a campaign that is competitive with a powerful Washington politician. And we’re doing it by relying on working Americans chipping in small, individual donations day after day, not big corporations or Super PACs.”
Additionally, the Canova campaign announced that they had received more individual contributions from Floridians than their opponent. Despite Debbie Wasserman Schultz having more than a decade to cultivate a donor base in Florida, the Canova campaign received 2,522 individual donations during the last financial quarter from Floridians compared to just 2,487 by Wasserman Schultz.
