DOES THAT COME WITH SHMEAR?
WASSERMAN SCHULTZ THROWS $500 BAGEL BREAKFAST;
CANOVA OFFERS THEM UP FOR FREE, HOLD THE SPECIAL INTEREST MONEY
Hollywood, FL—On Tuesday, May 31st at 8 AM, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and her challenger for the 23rd District Congressional seat Tim Canova, will each be holding bagel breakfasts with supporters. The difference? Wasserman Schultz’s event with set you back at least $500, the minimum suggested contribution for the fundraiser. Donors will be asked for contributions up to a maximum of $5,400, although it isn’t clear what they can expect to gain from opting for the costlier bagels. But they will get to speak with Barnie Frank, the unelected super delegate who Wasserman Schultz has named to the powerful Rules Committee for the Democratic National Convention this summer — and who has compared Bernie Sanders to Joe McCarthy for suggesting that politicians who take vast amounts of corporate money are likely compromised in their independence.
Meanwhile across town Tim Canova will hold a free event with supporters—and possibly a lecture on money in politics.
“As Wasserman Schultz dines with the big money lobbyists who fund her campaign, I’ll be enjoying my bagel—toasted with hummus—with nurses, teachers, students, seniors and others who think our political leaders should be held accountable by the voters, not Wall Street and other big-money donors,” said Canova.
Canova, a law professor of public finance at Nova Southeastern University, has made the broken campaign finance system a cornerstone of his campaign. The professor has raised more than $1 million from progressive voters throughout the state—and the country—in almost all increments of under $20.
“This is another incredible example of how broken our campaign finance laws have become. It would take a working American making the minimum wage in Florida over 62 hours — more than a week and a half of toil — just to be able to afford that entry-level bagel and speak with their member of Congress. If they chose to go for the maximum contribution, they would need to work over 16 weeks to be able to afford it. Throughout this campaign, our opponent has raised enough money from corporate donors and special interest groups to purchase more than a million bagels in South Florida. No matter how you slice it, that is just an obscene amount of money from the billionaire class,” continued Canova.
